Freshwater Fishing

The most popular activity when not in the field hunting at OakGrove, is fishing in the 35-acre pond behind the lodge. The pond is well stocked with bluegill, shellcracker, and largemouth bass. During the Summer of 2004, we constructed a 2400 ft2 boathouse on the edge of the pond. The boathouse is fully equipped with 4 boats and trolling motors, batteries, weight and data station, and fishing gear and tackle.

We strongly recommend that those wishing to fish during their stay bring their own rods, reels, and tackle; all other essentials are provided. Gear can be rented and tackle purchased for a nominal fee on site. We request that all rules and regulations pertaining to the boathouse and pond are respected, including catch restrictions.

Saltwater Fishing

Also within a one hour drive is some of the South’s finest inshore fishing. All months of the year, redfish (locally known as spot-tail bass) can be caught while tailing in the spartina grass or schooling in shallow mudflats. This can be quite a challenge either on fly or spinner bait. Also abundant along the SC coast are speckled trout, striped bass (rockfish), Spanish mackerel, flounder, various species of shark, and the mighty jack crevalle.

Golfing

With such close proximity to the coast, there is a host of other activities one can enjoy while relaxing away from the hustle and bustle. South Carolina is well known for its world-class golf courses. There are many challenging courses in the Beaufort and Hilton Head area, within a one hour drive. There are also three local courses that are open to the public, within 20 miles of the OakGrove lodge.

With proper notice, golfing and/or saltwater fishing trips to the coast can be arranged upon request.
